HEALTHCARE POLICY
To ensure that we at Nelmes meet the needs of individual children it is necessary for parents to provide information about their child’s medical needs prior to entrance into the group. This is vital to ensure that staff are fully aware of any medical condition and if necessary put in place an individual Health Care Plan, not only to support the child but to also identify health and safety measures. All Health Care Plans are devised by the Health Visitor and Parent, which will be implemented by the staff at the setting. Any child requiring additional support, advice will be sought from health care professionals including Area Sendco.
MANAGING MEDICINES
Staff will not administer any short-term prescribed medicines ie. antibiotics. If you have given your child any medication before bringing them into playgroup, it is vital that you tell a senior staff member so it can be recorded. This is in case an allergic reaction occurs while your child is in our care and requires emergency treatment. Staff will not administer any non-prescribed medication such as “Calpol or Neurofen”.
There are some instances where staff will administer some medication that is essential to the well-being of the child should the need arise. This is under strict supervision and with a signed individual Health Care Plan in place.
If your child has been sick or has diarrhoea the day/night before attending a pre-school session would you please ensure you keep them home for a minimum of 48 hours.
PROCEDURE BEFORE ADMINISTERING MEDICATION:
Before any medication is administered or accepted an agreement must be signed by the parent and the setting agreeing when and how medication may be used.
A record of medication, prescribed dose, expiry date, written instructions and time of dose will be kept to ensure accuracy each time the medication is administered. The parent must sign and acknowledge that medication has been given at the end of each session.
When medication is received at the start of the session staff will store the medicine in a box out of reach of children in the kitchen area only which is not accessible to any children in the setting.
All records are held in a confidential file with easy access for use in an emergency.
